There is a renewed energy in the world of woodworking with a new generation turning
to the skills and tools of their fathers and grandfathers. As a fine woodworker
evolves and his or her work becomes increasingly intricate and accurate there
is a natural trend away from power tools, and fine hand tools start to accumulate in their place.
Random orbital sanders sit forlorn in a cupboard replaced with Stanley Scraper
Planes and a good heavy Smoothing Plane. The noisy jointer gets only the big jobs
while the Iron jointer planes like the Stanley Number 8 straighten our boards for
us quietly and efficiently. The dust eventually settles in place of shavings.
This widespread de-evolution of the woodworker brings me great joy.
I think we are becoming better craftsmen because of it!
